A Shantyman…

Sea Shanty singing is very popular at the moment! I have had a great love for “shanty” singing from a young age, and have often sang shanties as part of historical reenacting as well as in the world of Irish music.

It is very important to me that music be accessible to all people, and a great way for that to happen is at a Sea Shanty Sing! A “Sing,” or “Sing-Out,” is an informal gathering of people who are sharing in the music together.

And did you know that singing in community is good for your healthy!?

In 2022, I started a gathering called “The Stoughton Sea Shanty Society,” which us an informal gathering with songbooks provided and no experience necessary! We began to meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Roxy’s Restobar in Stoughton, WI. That gathering has now grown and grown and has encouraged off-shoots. I have also helped to start a 3rd Tuesday of the Month Shanty Sing at MUSO in Madison, WI, a 1st Friday of the Month Shanty Sing at Awildan Distilling in Sun Prairie, WI, and semi-regular shanty “sings” in Dubuque, Galena, Milwaukee, and Soldiers Grove, WI.

I have also taken this format on the road to festivals, including the Tall Ships Festival in Door County, WI and the String Gathering Festival in Baraboo, WI, as well as a number of different community venues.

I would be happy to bring The Stoughton Sea Shanty Society’s Roving Song Circle format to your venue, and to help you get a regular shanty sing started in your community!
