A Shantyman…

My love for "shanty" singing began as a teenager participating in living history events. It was during these events that I first discovered the magic of call-and-response worksongs, and I quickly became hooked. Over time, my journey as a traditional Irish sean-nós-style (old style) singer and ballad singer evolved, and I soon found my voice as a "shantyman"—the leader of shanty songs, setting the pace and pitch for the crew.

These days, I perform with "Boxing the Compass," a shanty group based out of southern Wisconsin. But one of my proudest achievements is founding shanty sings like "The Stoughton Sea Shanty Society Roxy's Sing," which takes place on the second Tuesday of every month in Stoughton. I’m a passionate advocate for social singing, and I firmly believe in the fun—and health—benefits it offers. Sea Shanty Sings are for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or talent. Whether you’re leading a song, jumping in for a verse, or simply soaking in the music, there’s a place for you.

Songbooks are provided, and each session is an opportunity to learn and enjoy these timeless tunes. It’s a great way to bond with others, get active, and embrace the joy of making music together. I invite you to join us—singing is good for the soul!
