A Historian…

I’ve always had a passion for the past, and that drive led me to achieve a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where I was honored to serve as Valedictory Speaker for the December 2004 class. My interest in history goes beyond just the facts; it’s the stories of Wisconsin’s immigrant and Native American cultures that truly captivate me. I specialize in areas such as Irish History, American Civil War History, 19th-century European History, and, of course, Wisconsin’s own rich history.

My journey into history began at a young age. At 11, I became an American Civil War Reenactor with the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, where I learned the art of living history presentation. By 14, I was already writing a local history column for The Boscobel Dial, and it was my love for research and storytelling that led to one of my most significant discoveries: "The Huftill Flag." This Confederate flag, captured at the Battle of Gettysburg by Wisconsin soldiers, ignited a debate that led to its preservation and display at the Grant County Courthouse in Lancaster, Wisconsin.

In recent years, I’ve turned my attention to the life and legacy of renowned Norwegian-American Hardanger fiddler Hans Fykerud, an important figure in Stoughton, Wisconsin’s Norwegian traditional music scene. Along the way, I’ve published work as both a historian and a journalist, earning recognition from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association for investigative reporting. My love for history continues to fuel my involvement in organizing history discussion groups and festivals, and, of course, I can’t resist a good "dress up" when the occasion calls for it!
