A Spoons Evangelist…

A Spoons Evangelist: Keeping Tradition Alive with "The Rolling Ground Style"

My journey with spoons began in the hills of the Driftless Region, where some of my Irish ancestors settled after Black '47, the devastating year of the Great Irish Famine. Growing up, I was surrounded by family members who carried on the tradition of playing spoons and making Irish music. It’s through them that I developed a deep connection to this unique musical instrument and its rich cultural roots.

I continue this family tradition by playing spoons in a style I call "The Rolling Ground Style," named after the area in northern Crawford County, Wisconsin, where my ancestors made their home. It’s a fun, intricate, and highly musical way of playing, and I’m proud to keep it alive.

I also love sharing this tradition through workshops at schools, libraries, and festivals, where I teach the basics of spoons playing. A highlight of my performances is the "Spoons Haircut," a playful and theatrical game passed down in my family. During the performance, I invite audience members on stage, and yes— I play spoons on their heads! It’s great fun for all ages, and I encourage you to ask for a Spoons Haircut the next time you see me perform!
